Nature Trail and Coracle Ride
Our two visits to Galibore were unforgettable. We were immersed in the dense forest surrounding the camp, witnessing a unique ecosystem teeming with rich flora and fauna along the river. During our first visit, while relaxing on the riverbank, we were awestruck to spot a crocodile sunbathing on the opposite shore. The experience was surreal – the presence of this magnificent creature just across the river, while we enjoyed the tranquility, was simply breathtaking.
As we prepared for a coracle ride, cameras in hand, eager to capture the unique birdlife, we were greeted by a stroke of luck. Even before we embarked, a vibrant Common Kingfisher caught our attention with its impressive catch. It was the perfect start to our adventure!

Lesser Fish Eagle at Galibore
Krishna, our boatman, was not just a guide; he was a passionate naturalist. Our shared love for birds quickly forged a bond between us. He regaled us with tales of the river’s life, his voice a low rumble painting vivid pictures of encounters with elusive otters and the haunting calls of the Lesser Fish Eagle heard in recent days. The news of the Fish Eagle’s presence stirred a mix of excitement and apprehension. Would we be lucky enough to catch a glimpse? The memory of the Kingfisher’s dramatic catch lingered, a beacon of hope, but also a reminder that these encounters were fleeting.
The air was thick with the scent of damp earth and the distant murmur of the river. The sun filtered through the leaves, casting dappled shadows on the water. Suddenly, Krishna signaled us to shush, a wide smile gracing his face. He had heard something. My heart pounded as he pointed towards the towering trees.
A walk in the forest
“Let’s go,” Krishna whispered, his eyes gleaming with excitement.
Nutan, preferring to remain in the boat, watched us with a mixture of curiosity and amusement as we carefully disembarked, our boots sinking into the soft mud. We followed the direction of the call, pushing through the dense undergrowth. The air grew thick with humidity, the sounds of the river fading into the distance.
Finally, we reached a small clearing. And there, perched majestically on a branch high above, sat the Lesser Fish Eagle, a vision of power and grace. My breath caught in my throat; it was a moment of pure awe. My Sony 200-600mm, a cropped sensor mode on my A7Miii full frame body, yearned for light. We spent the next ten minutes mesmerized, capturing images of this magnificent creature before quietly retreating, leaving the Fish Eagle to enjoy its solitude.
We returned to the boat, our faces flushed with excitement. Nutan, eager to hear about our encounter, bombarded us with questions. As we continued our coracle ride, the memory of the majestic Fish Eagle, a fleeting glimpse into the wild heart of the river, lingered in our minds.
Indian Scops Owl and a Brown Fish Owl Encounter
Galibore never ceases to amaze. Even during a brief day visit, the camp unveiled its hidden treasures. This time, we joined forces with Vinayak, a naturalist whose sharp gaze spoke volumes. Within minutes, he introduced us to our ‘lifer’ – two sleepy Indian Scops Owls. What a spectacular start!
Vinayak led us on a nature walk, choosing a less-traveled path. He mentioned a recent sighting of a Brown Fish Owl pair, igniting a spark of hope within me. The trail meandered through the terrain, paralleling the river. Vinayak cautioned us to follow his footsteps as the path became more challenging. Nutan, intent on capturing the essence of the surroundings, preferred to explore at her own pace.
We ventured forward, our cameras at the ready. The trail was a testament to nature’s artistry, with boulders of varying sizes seemingly arranged with purpose, creating a natural pathway. And then, amidst this natural sculpture, a pair of piercing eyes met mine through my lens. It was the Brown Fish Owl, a breathtaking encounter.
