OUR TRAVEL STORY

The Plan

The adage ‘Any journey begins with planning’ holds true for me. Before embarking on any trip, I meticulously consider several factors: the destination, the distance to be covered, the preferred mode of travel, the ideal travel time, and the specific experiences I hope to gain. For this particular journey, my aspirations were clear: a scenic road trip through verdant landscapes, an escape from the urban clamor, and ample opportunities for birdwatching. Anejhari Butterfly Camp seamlessly aligned with all these desires, making it the perfect choice for my adventure.

The thrill of embarking on a road trip at dawn, gradually witnessing the sky illuminate as darkness recedes, is truly unparalleled. The process of meticulously plotting the route on the navigation system and curating a soul-stirring playlist serves as an invigorating prelude to the actual journey, akin to warming up before a race.

The Journey

We embarked on our journey to this remarkable property by Jungle Lodges & Resorts early in the morning, with the goal of reaching our destination before nightfall. The drive from Bangalore, spanning approximately 500 kilometers and requiring 8 to 9 hours, was a captivating experience. The picturesque landscapes unfolding before us provided a constant source of inspiration, keeping our travel spirits high throughout the journey. Initially, we had planned to stay for four nights, but the enchanting atmosphere of the place compelled us to extend our stay to five nights and six days.

The Arrival

Anejhari Butterfly Camp, nestled within the verdant embrace of the Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary, proved an ideal haven for avid birdwatchers and wildlife enthusiasts. Our stay was largely dedicated to exploring the avian wonders surrounding the camp. We embarked on a challenging trek, the most arduous we’d undertaken, burdened by heavy gear as we navigated the uneven terrain.

As the sun began to set, we quickly freshened up and headed towards the bird hide, eager to observe the vibrant plumage of the exotic avian species. Our anticipation was rewarded by the sighting of the magnificent Crimson-Backed Sunbird, a species endemic to the Western Ghats. The bird hide offered a comfortable respite, complete with refreshing tea and delectable hot pakodas. We lingered for about half an hour, savoring the moment before the encroaching darkness enveloped us.

Dinner was served at Golghar, a fitting conclusion to a day filled with exhilarating adventures and demanding physical exertion. The delicious meal, prepared in the traditional JLR style, provided a much-needed and thoroughly enjoyable end to our eventful day.

Trek to Arisinagundi Waterfall

The following day, we embarked on an expedition to the Arisinagundi Waterfall. While jeeps are readily available to transport visitors to a point near the falls, requiring a short kilometer-long descent on foot, we opted for a more adventurous approach. We chose to walk the entire 10-kilometer distance to the waterfall point, hoping to encounter avian and wildlife sightings along the way. The final mile proved particularly challenging, navigating through rugged terrain, but the breathtaking sight of the cascading waterfall instantly erased all traces of exhaustion.

The remaining days were dedicated to capturing the wonders of the natural world. We spent our time immersed in the surrounding beauty, filming and photographing the diverse array of birds and wildlife that inhabit the camp and its environs.
