Standing at the edge of Padukere Beach, in Udipi, I watched in awe as the sun surrendered itself to the restful arms of a distant island. This surreal, yet a common everyday phenomenon was the perfect culmination of an incredible journey. Picture this: a coastal town where the beaches are pristine, the people greet you with genuine warmth, and you can actually hear the waves without the chaos of tourist crowds, that’s Udupi. During our recent visit, we discovered something rare in today’s travel landscape: an authentic destination that hasn’t been “touristified.” You won’t find aggressive shopkeepers trying to sell you overpriced souvenirs, or restaurants serving watered-down versions of local cuisine. Instead, what awaits you is the real deal—a town that welcomes visitors while staying true to its soul.

We were fortunate to discover Leela’s Coral Creek Inn—a property that perfectly captures the essence of this coastal paradise. Imagine waking up to the serene Udayavara river flowing right before your eyes, with a completely private sit-out area where you can sip your morning coffee in absolute peace. Udupi is where spirituality meets the sea. Famous for the ancient Sri Krishna Temple, this town has been a pilgrimage center for centuries. But beyond its religious significance lies a treasure trove of experiences: golden beaches that stretch for miles, lush coconut groves swaying in the coastal breeze, and a food culture so rich it gave birth to the legendary “Udupi cuisine” that’s now celebrated across India.

The infrastructure here surprised us—well-maintained roads, clean streets, and facilities that make traveling comfortable without feeling commercialized. It’s clear that Udupi takes pride in itself, and that pride shows in every corner.

Tourist Places to Explore in Udupi

Shri Krishna Temple

A temple built in 13th Century, about 700 years old now, is a marvel of architecture. With a rich history, the temple is the spiritual heart of the city. Walking around the temple, the first thing that we noticed was cleanliness. And amazingly, this is one thing which we found common for most of the town.

What makes this temple truly unique is how Lord Krishna is worshipped here. The idol depicts Krishna as a young child holding a churning rod and a rope—representing the cosmic act of churning the ocean of milk from Hindu mythology. But here’s the fascinating part: devotees don’t view the deity directly face-to-face. Instead, darshan happens through a silver-plated window with nine holes, called the Navagraha Kindi. This window was designed this way because, according to tradition, the Lord is so powerful that direct viewing would be overwhelming.

The temple has been managed by eight monasteries (called Ashta Mathas) in a unique rotational system for centuries. Every two years, the management shifts to a different monastery, and this tradition continues even today.

Marvanthe Beach

Imagine driving along a coastal highway with the Arabian Sea on one side and the serene Souparnika River on the other. That’s Maravanthe —a narrow strip of land where the beach and backwaters run parallel to each other, separated only by the NH66. It’s like nature decided to show off and created this stunning spectacle where you can experience both the sea and river simultaneously.

The beach stretches for about 2 kilometers of golden sand meeting turquoise waters, with the Western Ghats forming a picturesque backdrop in the distance. The unique geography makes for some of the most Instagram-worthy views you’ll ever capture—but honestly, no camera can do justice to what your eyes witness here.

The uniqueness of the Marvanthe Beach lies in the T-shaped formations along the shoreline. These aren’t random; they’re carefully placed tetrapods (concrete wave breakers) designed to protect the beach from erosion and manage the strong coastal waves. While they’re functional structures, they’ve become a unique feature of Maravanthe’s landscape, adding an almost artistic, geometric contrast to the natural curves of sand and water. What we liked the most was the curved beach line that these formations created between two adjacent structures. We found them fascinating and they make for interesting photography subjects too.

How to reach Marvanthe Beach?

Maravanthe Beach is located about 55 kilometers from Udupi (roughly a 1-hour drive) along the Mangalore-Udupi highway (NH66). The drive itself is an experience, with coastal views accompanying you for most of the journey.

Since it’s right on the highway, you can’t miss it. Look for the stretch where you’ll see water on both sides of the road—that’s your cue to pull over. You can use the Gmap Location shared below.

Travellers Tips for Marvanthe Beach

1. A few small bakery shops are located about one or two kilometers before you reach the beach. You can stop here to buy treats like samosas, pastries, or cake items. This is also a good place to pick up water bottles, as options for buying refreshments become limited closer to the shoreline..
2. Don’t venture too deep into the sea—currents can be unpredictable.
3. One should either visit Early morning during Sunrise or Sunset. We visited in the morning around 10 am and it was already hot. The place looks magical but the excessive heat forced us to packup sooner than later.

Prasanna Anjaneya Temple

Tucked away in the coastal village of Hangalur at Kundapura, the Prasanna Anjaneya Temple is a beautiful blend of spirituality and scenic charm. If you’re visiting Maravanthe Beach, this temple makes for a perfect addition to your itinerary—it’s just a short distance away and offers a peaceful, devotional experience.

The temple, standing 80 foot tall, the statue of Lord Hanuman, is a marvel to witness. The magnificient statue doesn’t just stand at the temple; it serves as the temple. Situated right off NH66, is just a few minute drive away from the highway. Though the roads get narrow as we reached nearer to the temple, but was an easy drive. Plenty of space available for one to park cars. The atmosphere in and around the temple is serene, surrounded by greeneries, its a peaceful ambience. A pleasant experience is guaranteed.

For travelers exploring the Udupi coast, this temple offers a unique experience—it’s spectacular, photogenic, and spiritually uplifting all at once. Whether you’re a devoted Hanuman bhakt seeking blessings for strength and courage, or simply someone who appreciates impressive monuments, the towering Prasanna Anjaneya statue is bound to leave a lasting impression.

Kaup Lighthouse

Standing proudly at 27 meters tall, the Kaup Lighthouse was built in 1901 by the British and continues to function as a navigational aid for ships and fishing boats along the Arabian Sea. Though it still emits light to guide vessels, it has also become a popular tourist attraction. Located just 13 kilometers south of Udupi town, this iconic black-and-white striped lighthouse sits dramatically on rocky black granite cliffs overlooking Kaup Beach. The climb to the top is an adventure in itself—the spiral staircase winds upward, but be prepared for the final challenge: a steep, narrow wooden staircase with very little foot space that requires careful navigation.

It’s not for the faint-hearted, but the effort is worth it for the breathtaking panoramic views—the Arabian Sea stretching endlessly on one side and serene backwaters on the other. Entry costs just ₹10 per person, with an additional ₹40 if you’re carrying a camera. The lighthouse is typically open in the late afternoon (around 4:00-6:00 PM), making it perfect for catching the golden hour and spectacular sunsets.

Why Kaup?

What makes Kaup special is its peaceful, uncommercialized vibe and, of course, the local flavors. Unlike busier beaches, Kaup remains relatively quiet and pristine, ideal for leisurely walks along the shore, photography, and simply soaking in the coastal beauty. The beach itself features golden sand and rugged rocks where you might spot plenty of crabs scuttling about. No visit is complete without trying the local ‘Churmuri,’ a spicy-tangy puffed rice snack sold by vendors near the beach—it’s the perfect accompaniment to the sound of the waves! While swimming isn’t recommended due to strong currents and submerged rocks, the beach offers a perfect setting for relaxation. Plan to spend 1-2 hours here—enough time to climb the lighthouse, enjoy the views, explore the beach, and grab that delicious snack. It’s an easy addition to any Udupi itinerary and well worth the short detour from the main highway.

Mattu Beach

Mattu Beach offers a unique geographical spectacle that sets it apart from every other coastal destination in Udupi: it is a slender strip of land with the vast Arabian Sea on one side and the tranquil Udyavara River (or backwaters) on the other. Crucially, you do not need a boat to reach this hidden gem; the beach is easily accessible via road. Travelers can approach from the north using the Malpe-Padukere Bridge or from the south via the Mattu Bridge.

This drive is an adventure in itself, with the road running along the beach, beautifully sandwiched between the two water bodies, providing a mesmerizing, surreal visual experience. This beach is not for the usual tourist crowds but rather for those seeking solitude and pristine natural beauty. With long, clean stretches of sand and minimal commercial activity, Mattue beach, located near Malpe, is a haven for photography, long contemplative walks, and watching a golden sunset over the horizon where the sky meets the sea.

Our Experience

For those seeking an immersive experience, a stay right off this unique beach point, such as Leela’s Coral Inn, offers a true taste of coastal luxury and peace. Staying here means enjoying mesmerizing backwater views directly from your room, complete with a private balcony. The highlight is the morning ritual: sipping a cup of tea while watching the sun rise over the serene backwaters—a moment of quiet magic amidst the clean rooms and great hospitality. While swimming in the sea is risky, the backwaters, lined with mangrove forests, offer opportunities for kayaking and boating. However, these activities are strictly dependent on high tide. The water level typically remains high through the night and late morning, receding as the day progresses, which limits boat access into the beautiful mangroves.

Blue Flag Padubidri Beach

Padubidri Beach holds the prestigious international ‘Blue Flag’ certification, making it a standout destination not just in Udupi, but across India. This eco-label guarantees an experience of world-class excellence in cleanliness, environmental management, safety, and water quality. Unlike the rugged, natural vibe of other Udupi beaches, Padubidri is a beautifully organized and developed coastal haven, presenting a wide expanse of clean golden sand and remarkably clear waters. The atmosphere is tranquil and safe, guarded by trained lifeguards and monitored by CCTV surveillance. It is easily accessible via National Highway 66 (NH 66) and is located about 25 km from Udupi town. The beach operates with set visiting hours (typically 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM) and a nominal entry fee (around ₹30-₹40), ensuring that the high standards and pristine condition are meticulously maintained for every visitor.

Malpe Beach

Malpe Beach, located just 6 km from Udupi town, is the most vibrant and heavily ‘touristified’ spot in the district. It is highly popular and consequently gets extremely crowded, especially during weekends and peak season. However, despite the high foot traffic, the atmosphere remains friendly, and efforts are made to maintain cleanliness. Malpe is the ultimate hub for those seeking action, offering a plethora of water sports including parasailing, jet skiing, banana boat rides, and speed boating. It’s safe to get into the water here, though be aware of the large crowds. The Sea Walk, a picturesque promenade extending into the ocean, offers stunning views of the Arabian Sea and the fishing harbor, making the sunset hours the best time to visit to enjoy the colorful spectacle.

While other Udupi beaches offer a peaceful setting for sunset walks, Malpe caters to pure commercial enjoyment. You’ll find a wide variety of commercial options here, including unique activities like camel and horse rides along the shore. There are also plenty of small eateries and stalls around; while the quality may not always match Udupi’s best dining experiences, they are ok for trying a quick snack. Most importantly, Malpe is the launching point for boats to St. Mary’s Island. This short ferry ride takes you to a National Geological Monument famous for its unique hexagonal basalt rock formations—an absolute must-see that balances out the beach’s commercial energy.

St. Mary’s Island

St. Mary’s Island, a National Geological Monument, is an essential stop on any Udupi itinerary, accessible only via a thrilling boat ride from Malpe Beach. I’m glad I wore slippers without much prior thought, as the experience begins before you even board: getting onto the boat requires wading into knee-deep water, so traveling light and wearing footwear you can easily take off (like slippers) is a must!

The journey itself is an experience in collective excitement. I won’t forget the silent adrenaline rush and the way those splashes united a boat full of strangers—we didn’t exchange words, but the vibe matched, and a big smile was on everyone’s face, as the boat ride to the island gets bumpy, with splashes that are guaranteed to drench your quick-dry clothes and belongings. It’s a wonderful feeling—a moment where strangers on the boat are united by the collective surprise and the shared smiles created by the choppy, scenic voyage. The current round-trip charge for this adventure is ₹400 per person.

Important to Know

 

Once you arrive, be prepared to spend 2 to 3 hours exploring this clean, well-maintained island. While many visitors get drawn to the main entrance, the true spectacle lies to the left: the iconic hexagonal basalt rock formations. These unique columns were created millions of years ago by ancient volcanic activity and provide an unbelievable backdrop for photography. To capture the absolute best light, aim to reach Malpe Beach around 3:00 PM. This gives you ample time, as boarding and the ride itself can take up to an hour, even with frequent boats.

The last boat to the island leaves Malpe around 5:00 PM, and the last boat from the island departs at 6:00 PM. Arriving near sunset ensures that the golden hour provides perfect, studio-quality light for stunning portraits against the unique rock columns. Please note, the entry and exit process can be a bit challenging for guests with mobility issues or those over 60. Wear appropriate attire and plan accordingly.

Hanging Bridge

The Hanging Bridge near Udupi offers a refreshing escape from the coastal beaches and immerses you in classic backwater beauty. Built in the style of the famous bridges near Thirthahalli, it stretches gracefully across the backwaters, connecting two banks with scenic views of the tranquil river and lush surroundings. A word of caution: during our visit, the bridge was undergoing repairs and closed to the public, so it’s worth checking its status before planning your trip. However, even with the bridge closed, the area surrounding it is characterized by lush greenery and peaceful flowing water—far removed from touristy crowds. One important tip: visit either early morning or evening, as the open setting means midday sun can be intense and uncomfortable.

The real draw here is the backwater activities that remain fully operational from 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM. Boating costs ₹400 per person for a 30-40 minute leisurely ride through serene mangrove forests—perfect for soaking in the calm beauty. For a more active adventure, kayaking is available at just ₹200 per person for an hour, giving you the freedom to explore narrow waterways at your own pace and observe the diverse ecosystem up close. This spot provides a completely different water experience compared to Udupi’s bustling beaches—quieter, more contemplative, and offering a side of the region many visitors miss. Whether you’re a nature enthusiast or simply seeking peaceful water activities, the Hanging Bridge area delivers a memorable backwater experience. Rremember to wear comfortable clothes if you don’t mind getting slightly wet if you’re kayaking.

Delta Point

Delta Point, also known locally as Kodi Bengre Beach, offers a breathtaking and unique geographical spectacle in Udupi: it is the serene confluence where the Suvarna River gracefully merges with the mighty Arabian Sea. This creates an estuary environment where the long, thin strip of land is dramatically surrounded by water on three sides, offering visitors the rare chance to stand where the river and the sea meet. The atmosphere here is renowned for its tranquility and pristine nature, providing a stark contrast to the crowds of Malpe.

The golden sands, the sight of traditional fishing boats, and the mesmerizing view of the river’s calm waters on one side and the ocean’s expanse on the other make this an absolute haven for photographers and nature lovers. You may that the simple act of standing at the point, feeling the sea breeze while watching the two water bodies blend, can be profoundly peaceful. Best of all, there is no entry fee and the beach is easily accessible by road, just a short drive from Udupi town.

Recommendation

To truly immerse yourself in the beauty of Delta Point, aim to visit during the sunrise or sunset. The golden hour at this location is spectacular, providing optimal light without the harsh midday heat. This area is home to traditional fishing communities, offering a glimpse into the local coastal life and fresh seafood. For those seeking active exploration, the backwaters near the confluence are perfect for gentle water activities like boating and kayaking, often allowing you to explore the nearby mangrove-lined channels. A critical tip for visitors is to be cautious if swimming, as the currents at the point where the river and sea meet can be particularly strong and unpredictable. While amenities are limited compared to a highly commercialized beach, the unspoiled, raw beauty of the confluence offers an authentic coastal experience that truly sets Delta Point apart.

Where to Stay in Udupi?

A budget Stay

Finding the perfect place to crash is key to a great trip, and our Udupi accommodation journey was a deliberate move, starting with a budget beach stay to recover from our marathon journey. Our first coastal night was spent at Leela’s Beach House at Padukere Beach. This was our simple, sea-facing pit stop that offered exactly what we needed: quietude and space. The resort area is large, perfect for stretching your legs, playing a quick sport, or snapping portraits against the cool artwork on the walls.

We spent a wonderful peaceful evening on the beach right in front of the resort. Watching the sun dip behind the distant island—a perfect antidote to a long travel day. Speaking of long travel, we were exhausted. Because, before coming here, we spent a night immersed in pure nature at Seethanadi Nature Camp, which is nestled about 40 km from Udupi in the Western Ghats. It was blissful but tiring. Specially after a long drive from Bangalore, and this is why we craved a simple beach view for our first recovery night! For food, you can easily order delivery from Aquateria or use Zomato.

A true Luxury experience

 

For the final two nights, we decided to upgrade—and honestly, it was the best decision we made. We moved to the same owners’ luxurious new property, Leela’s Coral Creek Inn at Mattu Beach near Malpe. The whole experience here was a world-class upgrade. The resort is beautifully designed, the service is delicate, and the staff are truly passionate. I was so impressed by the owner, Mr. Chandra, for his energetic hospitality. To add on, Aryan from housekeeping was our tea-craving hero! The best part? Waking up and witnessing the sunrise from our room’s private balcony overlooking the serene backwaters felt like an absolute blessing.

We recommend the resort highly for a peaceful stay because of its picturesque setup and quiet vibe. You can even grab a quick Maggi Noodle breakfast at the resort if you’re feeling lazy. With tariffs starting around ₹8 K to ₹10 K a night, this move from budget beach of ₹4 K to ₹5 K to boutique backwater was the perfect progression for our Udupi trip.

Where to eat in Udupi?

Udupi is synonymous with food, and while the region is famed for its vegetarian cuisine, the coastal location means the seafood scene is phenomenal. My top personal recommendation for non-vegetarians is Machali Restaurant. The entire experience here is authentic, from the simple setup to the truly amazing food. I loved their signature combo of fresh white rice, a soulful fish curry, and the incredible Fish Kabab. It was the definition of coastal perfection. You can also indulge in fresh crabs or prawns here. The service operates quickly, the place maintains cleanliness. The high quality comes at a reasonable price, which provides significant value. They even have parking, making it easy for car travelers. However, a small word of caution. I personally didn’t love the Ghee Roast Chicken here, though I hear other local spots have truly mastered the dish. Overall, Machali offers an authentic, guaranteed-tasty seafood experience.

Beyond Machali’s seafood bounty, Udupi has legendary spots catering to all tastes. For the acclaimed Mangalorean Ghee Roast Chicken that locals swear by, head to Anupama Restaurant in Kaup. However, no trip is complete without the original, globally-famous Udupi Vegetarian Cuisine. Visit legendary Mitra Samaj or Diana Restaurant near the Sri Krishna Temple. They are famous for their defining Goli Baje, Neer Dosa, and South Indian meals. For a modern, non-vegetarian alternative, try Thambila. Udupi ensures a clean, tasty, and satisfying meal is always just around the corner.

When to visit Udupi?

For the best overall experience, visit Udupi during the winter season (October to March). The weather is wonderfully pleasant and mild 20 to 30 degrees, making it perfect for exploring Udupi. Avoid the summer (April–May) due to high heat. Monsoon (June–September), which brings heavy rain and limits beach and ferry access is not recommended. Aim for the cooler half of the year for maximum fun and flexibility.

How to Reach Udupi?

Major South Indian cities connect well with Udupi, offering several convenient travel options.

• By Air: The nearest airport is Mangalore International Airport (IXE), which is approximately 60 km away. Flights from major cities across India and the Middle East serve Mangalore well. From the airport, you can easily hire a taxi or a pre-booked cab to Udupi, which takes about 90 minutes.

• By Rail: Udupi has its own railway station (UD) on the scenic Konkan Railway route. This makes it accessible from Mumbai, Goa, and Kerala. However, if travelling from Bangalore, the best is to take a train to Mangalore Central (MAQ) or Mangalore Junction (MAJN). And then complete the remaining distance to Udupi by bus or taxi.

• By Road: Road travel is one of the most popular ways to reach Udupi. The overnight bus journey from Bangalore usually takes about 8  hours. Alternatively, driving yourself provides the most flexibility for exploring the various beaches and backwater points like Pithrody and Kaup. NH 66 places Udupi conveniently for drivers coming from the North (like Goa/Mumbai) or the South (like Mangalore/Kasaragod). We found our drive experience from Bangalore to Udupi extremely pleasant as we drove through some scenic beauties. The roads maintain good condition throughout.
