Birdwatching at Mangalajodi is an opportunity to witness the wintering migratory birds up close. Mangalajodi, a hidden gem in Odisha, offers a unique opportunity to witness the annual migration of millions of birds. Every winter, from December to February, Chilika Lake becomes a vibrant hub for these feathered visitors. A significant number of these migratory birds choose the serene wetlands of Mangalajodi as their winter retreat.

Imagine yourself amidst hundreds of birds, their colorful plumage painting the sky. A boat ride through the tranquil waters of Mangalajodi allows you to get up close to these magnificent creatures. From the majestic asian-openbills to the tiny sandpipers, you’ll be amazed by the diversity of birdlife.

Overview

Mangalajodi, a quaint village nestled on the northern edge of Chilika Lake in Odisha, has an inspiring tale of transformation. Once known for bird hunting, the villagers have undergone a remarkable shift, transitioning from hunters to protectors. Thanks to the efforts of conservation groups, these locals now use their knowledge to guide birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts.

What sets Mangalajodi apart is the unique opportunity to witness diverse bird species at incredibly close range. Though we visited in late February, when many migratory birds had already departed, we were still amazed by the hundreds of species that remained.

Every year, renowned organizations like National Geographic visit Mangalajodi to study and document the incredible birdlife during the migration season.

Birds seen at Mangalajodi

During the peak migration season, hundreds to thousands of migratory birds flock to this part of the lake, transforming it into a birdwatcher’s paradise. Over 200 species of birds can be spotted here, including the striking Asian Openbill, the elegant Grey and Purple Herons, and numerous Godwits. Other notable species include the distinctive Black-headed Ibis, the glossy Ibis, and the rare Leucistic Temminck’s Stint.

One of the most exciting aspects of birdwatching in Mangalajodi is the opportunity to photograph these magnificent creatures up close, right from your boat.

How to reach Mangalajodi?

Mangalajodi is just about an hr and half drive from Puri. 75 Kms from Bubaneshwar and about 65 Km from Puri. Roads are in excellent conditions. You can either drive or book a cab to reach here. Since, this trip was part of my Road trip from Bangalore to Patna, so while returning Bangalore, we drove to Odisha. Checkout my other blog on my travel “Bangalore to Patna by Road” if you need to travel that route.

Where to Stay in Mangalajodi?

Mangalajodi offers limited accommodation options, primarily catering to birdwatchers. We stayed at Mangalajodi Bird View Resort, a convenient choice located right in the heart of the village. Many visitors choose this resort to catch the early morning boating sessions.

We recommend staying in Mangalajodi to ensure you’re on time for the early morning boat tours. Trying to commute from Puri can be challenging due to the distance and potential fog delays.

Our host at Mangalajodi Resort provided exceptional hospitality and local insights. As a passionate birdwatcher and local, he offered valuable tips and guidance. He even arranged for a visit to Chilika Lake and we got to witness the birds from the bird watching tower at the Chilika reserve.
